The story of the Al Amru Bil Ma'ruf Foundation for Education and Development — told through the moments that shaped it, from its founding in Kumasi to the celebrations of today.
Some dates are known publicly; for the early years we mark the era faithfully rather than invent a date. Each entry reflects what the foundation and its teachers have shared.
The Al Amru Bil Ma'ruf Foundation for Education and Development is established in Kumasi, Ghana — named after the Qur'anic principle of al-amr bi al-ma'ruf, "enjoining what is right" (Qur'an 3:104). Its mission from the very beginning: to guide students in memorizing, living and spreading the Qur'an.
"And let there be from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong." — Qur'an 3:104
Students of all ages begin gathering in Qur'anic memorization circles — the halaqat — at the Al Amru Bil Ma'ruf Centre Premises. Under patient teachers, young children and adults alike set out to commit the Book of Allah to heart.
"It is never too late to learn the Qur'an."
The foundation opens weekly Sunday evening Qur'an classes to the community — welcoming new students each week, whatever their age or starting point. The invitation still stands: "join us this and every Sunday evening."
The foundation builds its online community — a WhatsApp channel for updates and announcements, and a TikTok page (@halqatul.amru.bil) where the halaqah shares recitations, including Surah Al-Inshiqaq, and spotlights its students, such as Maimuna Mohammed, Yakub Adam Issah and Sadat Thalha.
The foundation holds its Maiden Qur'anic Memorization Graduation Ceremony at the Al Amru Bil-Ma'ruf Centre Premises — the ceremony that began the tradition. The first batch of memorizers is honoured before their families, teachers and the community, celebrated under the banner of #Graduation2025.
Where the tradition of celebrating the memorizers began.
With the first graduation behind it, the foundation keeps its doors open — the halaqat grow, new memorizers are nurtured, and the second batch begins its journey toward the same blessed moment.
The mission goes international: the foundation's first Nigeria cohort celebrates its graduation — "It's graduation day!" — marking the reach of the halaqah beyond Ghana's borders.
The foundation now serves students in two countries, carrying the same mission — memorizing, living and spreading the Qur'an — from Kumasi to Lagos and beyond.
A celebration of faith, knowledge, dedication and achievement: the second batch of Qur'an memorizers graduates at the historic Kumasi Central Mosque. The official programme opens with a supplication by Sheikh Abdul Hadi Omar (Imam of Nima), features recitations by the graduates, addresses by the founder and senior scholars — including Mam Abubakr and Sheikh Abdul Rahman Yaqub Joga — and closes with the distribution of certificates and a closing supplication.
"A celebration of faith, knowledge, dedication and achievement."
Two graduating batches, a growing online family of 223+ followers, classes every Sunday evening and students in two countries — the story of the Al Amru Bil Ma'ruf Foundation is far from finished. The next chapter begins with every new student who joins the halaqah.
